In order for a Domain Transfer to be successful the following pre-conditions must be
met:
- The domain name must have been registered for more than 60 days.
- The current admin contact's email address must be able to confirm the transfer request.
- Domain must not be "On-Hold" by the current registrar. This condition can
exist for many reasons, including lack of payment or domain expiry.
Domain Transfer Process
Step 1 - End User Requests Transfer
End-User chooses to have their domain transferred to sharedNIC and submits a request
using the online forms
Step 2 - Current Admin Contact Confirms Request
Once the transfer request is submitted, the current domain Admin Contact will receive
an email containing a link that includes a key to the Transfer Approval Web Page; this
email is parsed from the existing WHOIS information for that domain.
NOTE: if the system is unable to pull Admin Contact information from
the current Registrar WHOIS server, the transfer request will be reviewed manually. If we
are able to find current Admin contact information, we will send notification to that
email address; if we are not able to find current Admin contact information, the transfer
request will be cancelled and the End-User will be notified of the problem.
The Admin Contact either:
- acknowledges the transfer request, and the request moves on to the next step
- refuses transfer, and End-User receives notification
- In this case, the payment for this transfer request will be refunded.
- does not respond to the email (for whatever reason) for 7 days, and the transfer is
consequently cancelled
- In this case, the End-User is notified and the payment for this transfer request will be
refunded.
Step 3 - New Registrar Admin Review
Once approved by the Admin Contact, the transfer request is queued to the new Registrar
Admin Review area for review. This process will take approximately 24-48 hours, but has no
time limit.
- If the transfer is acceptable, the new Registrar admin approves it, and a request is
submitted to the current Registrar for the domain in question
- If the transfer is unacceptable, the new Registrar admin cancels it, and the End-User
will receive a Transfer failure notification with a reason for the cancellation.
Step 4 - Current Registrar Review
The Current Registrar has five (5) days to either approve or decline the request. It is
important to note that should the current registrar take no action the request will be
automatically approved after the fifth day. However, if the current registrar declines the
request, we must wait nine (9) days before officially canceling the transfer
- If the current registrar approves the request (or the fifth day passes with no
cancellation), the registrar information in the root server is updated to reflect a new
registrar hosted domain and the End-User is notified.
- If the current registrar declines the request any time within the 5 day period, the
End-User is notified once 9 days have passed.
- In this event, the payment for this transfer request will be refunded.
.
Cost
The domain transfer itself doesn't cost anything, but one year registration fee is charged
to register the domain for a year with sharedNIC. This
one year is added on top of whatever time is remaining on the domain from the other
registrar. E.g., if you registered your domain name with Network Solutions, and it has 2
years remaining on the registration, then after a successful transfer it will expire in 3
years.
Please NOTE: If your transfer order meets the preconditions mentioned above and the transfer is unsuccessful for some reason, the payment
for this transfer order will be fully refunded. However, if a transfer order does not meet the preconditions and the transfer is unsuccessful, we may charge $5.00 for the handling.
